English Language Program

The Need

For students in Mexico, speaking English can greatly expand future employment opportunities—especially in areas like Rocky Point where the economy relies so heavily on tourists from the U.S. Learning English can also provide students with access to scholarships and study abroad opportunities, increase their understanding of other cultures and improve their confidence.

The Barriers

Although English is offered in most public schools in Rocky Point, this instruction is typically very limited and usually focuses primarily on simple vocabulary and phrases. This is often due to a shortage of teachers who have sufficient proficiency in English to teach more complex, advanced English. Consequently, most local young people who are able to learn English come from families that can afford to send them to private, bilingual schools.

The Program

In January of 2021 a talented young woman arrived in Penasco to work with the local team as an English as a Second Language (ESL) Coordinator. She is currently conducting a needs assessment, researching curriculum options, and introducing basic English concepts to students who attend homework clubs. She and the AIM Penasco team hope to be ready to launch a pilot project by the Fall of 2021 offering daily intensive English language instruction to students at one of the homework clubs we support. We hope to expand the program to all homework clubs by Fall of 2022 and our long-term goal is for all of the students in the program to be proficient in English by the time they graduate from high school.

How You Can Get Involved

  • Volunteer for ‘FUN FRIDAYS: As part of the needs assessment process our ESL Coordinator is traveling to different homework clubs to lead fun and engaging activities to introduce students to the English language. If you live in Rocky Point or will be visiting on a Friday and are interested in helping to educate and empower local kids consider volunteering to help with FUN FRIDAY activities.  For more information contact ESL@stepsoflove.org.
